Why Hockey, Coach?

We asked coaches, why hockey was great for kids to learn to play.

In our Free to Play after school program, kids are exposed to the game of hockey on our pathway powered by the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation through ball hockey. Played in school gyms, Fan Park in downtown’s Ice District, or seen here at the ACT Aquatic and Recreation Centre on game day.

“Because it’s hard, and when kids do hard things, they learn to overcome adversity.” — Coach Cole

“… grow and excel in a sport that they otherwise wouldn’t be getting used to.” — Coach Dagane

“Your team is super important.” — Coach Gabriel

“I think hockey holistically is good for children, especially young athletes.” — Coach Cedric

Our Free to Play coaches understand the assignment, utilizing the unique aspects of hockey to teach the kids cooperation, communication, and how to deal with a challenge. Game on! 🥅
