Tragically, Shane lost his life in a car accident six years ago at the age of 28. While they struggled with such a devastating loss, Shane’s family decided to do something meaningful to remember him. The Shane McElhanney Memorial Fund was set up in 2016 to “remove the financial barriers for children and youth to play the sport of their choice”.

Evelyn Chicoine, Win4Skin & Owen Schlosser Endowment Fund

“Out of something sad, has come something positive,” says Evelyn Chicoine.

In 2009, her brother Owen died from skin cancer.

He was only 21.

Owen’s sudden passing “was devastating for family, friends and the whole community,'' says Evelyn. However, they decided to use a sad event to propel a positive one.

To honor the memory of Owen, who had been a lover of sports all his life, his friends decided to host a hockey tournament and from that tournament, Win4Skin was born.

About 6 (or 7 ) years ago, Casanova went to his community rec. center to enjoy a game of soccer with his son. However, there was no place in the center for soccer, in fact, soccer was not allowed. Casanova grew up in Millwoods, an area he describes as very multicultural. “All my friends were Jamaican, Punjabi, Phillipino, Chilean.” Says Casanova. “ So you drop this facility in there where there’s no soccer allowed? That’s the first sport for all of those people.”

Rebalkin is now the co-owner of not only The Next Act, but also Pip, a restaurant on the corner of Calgary Trail and 83rd Avenue that specializes in “elevated comfort food,” wine, and cocktails, and Meat, a Texan-inspired barbecue centering around variations of, well, meat. The restaurants are co-owned by Angus, Nathan McLaughlin, his best friend since preschool, and Saylish Haas, a friend of his and McLaughlin’s since high school. Their friend Mike Angus also has an ownership role in Pip.
