Staff Spotlight: Derek Hemsley
Derek Hemsley (right) - Coach Education and Curriculum Development Lead
This week interviewed our Coach Education and Curriculum Development Lead here at Free Play for Kids after practice, Derek Hemsley. Derek is also an Assistant Coach with the UofA Golden Bears mens hockey team.
Derek shared a valuable perspectives on the transformative power of sport, what makes a good coach.
Reflecting on his own journey, he shared:
“My dad tought me true power of sport, where it can not only that it transform lives, it can save lives. I’ve always wanted to circle back to that and now I get to give back to the community. ”
When Derek talks about sport and coaching at Free Play, he doesn't talk about wins and losses, he talks about being a cheerleader for every kid who walks through our doors.
