Job Summary
Free Play for Kids is searching for a dedicated and energetic individual to join our team as a seasonal Assistant Basketball Coach on a contract basis. If you're an experienced coach or a passionate basketball player looking to grow into a coaching role, we'd love to have you join our Wolves Basketball Program.
As an Assistant Basketball Coach, you will work alongside the Wolves Basketball Coordinator/Head Coach and Program Manager to help deliver high-quality practices and games while creating a positive and enriching experience for all participants. This role requires strong communication, teamwork, and leadership skills, along with a genuine passion for developing young athletes both on and off the court. You will support the planning and delivery of engaging practices, assist with game-day operations, and help create a fun, safe, and inclusive environment where participants can build basketball skills, confidence, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
The successful candidate must be able to work a flexible schedule, as practices are held during weekday evenings and games and tournaments typically take place on weekends. As part of the Wolves Basketball Program, you will play an important role in helping deliver high-quality basketball experiences while supporting the continued growth and success of our athletes and program.
Education & Qualifications
Some experience working with youth is valued
Some experience playing or assisting in basketball environments (club, community, schools)
Ability to support the head coach with the lesson plans, provide reinforcement to athletes and assist with supervision.
Working towards or completed, a degree or diploma in Physical Education, Sport and Recreation, Kinesiology, Education, Sociology, Psychology, Early Childhood Education, or equivalent from a recognized post-secondary institution considered an asset.
Experience coaching youth sport teams and/or extensive playing experience.
Clear up-to-date criminal and vulnerable sector check.
Standard First Aid Certification and CPR training or ability to obtain quickly.
Valid certification in coaching is considered an asset.
Experience with technology such as Google Meet and Connecteam apps is considered an asset.
Responsibilities
Assisting in leading practices, games, drills, and with the ultimate goal of creating safe, accessible, and inclusive spaces for kids to play, belong, and grow.
Working with youth between the ages of 9 - 17 by facilitating programming in collaboration with other team members.
Training the youth to play basketball and compete in leagues and tournaments.
Administering formal and informal assessments to gauge participants' skill levels.
Modeling key organization values through interactions with all internal and external partners and team members.
Relating to youth from diverse communities and acting as a mentor and role model for kids in the program.
Completing additional training and certifications as required through the Free Play training program, such as Making Ethical Decisions and Safe Sport courses.
Participating in work assignments arising from special events, special projects, or overall program initiatives.
Understanding the power of sport as a tool for social good.

Position Conditions
This is a seasonal position from 10 hours per week.

Hours of work are determined by league & program schedule but primarily:
1-2 practices per week (2-4 hrs)
1-2 game days per week (2-4 hrs)
Games: determined by league and often on the weekends
Jobs are performed in schools and recreation settings, but work settings may vary depending on projects.
