Welcome to Play

Helping Newcomers Thrive Through Play

Welcome to Play supports recently arrived refugee families during the critical early stages of resettlement in Edmonton. Designed for children, youth, and parents who are not yet enrolled in school and are living in hotels or transitional housing, the program offers safe, active, and trauma-informed daily adventures, ranging from recreational centres to museums, that help families feel welcome and begin building a sense of belonging in Canada.

  • Children (6–12): Daily outings with games, crafts, and exploration.

  • Youth (12–18): Connected to leadership opportunities through Play to Lead.

  • Parents/Adults: Join activities and access referrals to adult programs.

This program reduces stress, supports mental health, and creates community connections through fun, culturally safe play.

  • Approximately 40 new participants a week, ~2,000 participants in a year.
