Lesson of the week (#2): trying new things
This week we have learned to try new things!
This week, we also learned the importance of trying new things. With this, we learned that it means to actively take risks and support and encourage others to take risks as well, and put themselves out of their comfort zone.
It's important that Kids learn to take risks because it develops resilience, enhances creativity, builds confidence, and fosters adaptability.
With this in mind, we intend to create a culture that celebrates and encourages taking risks and conquering fears of trying new things.
We learned to implement this with the use of challenges in play that will encourage kids to try new things in an exciting and rewarding way. Some of these include..
Trendsetter challenge - With this challenge, we encourage kids to be creative and come up with a new skill move!
Risk a Risk - Invite athletes to take 3 risks during the session
Imitation Game - Invite athletes to think of a skill or approach one of their role models makes and try to do it themselves!
Courageous champs - Encourage athletes to think of some of their fears and become a champion by overcoming them!
Coach’s challenge - Coaches can come up with a unique challenge designed to encourage kids to take a risk and try something new!
Of course, Kids may need some extra help in learning this lesson through the challenges we've given them. That's why we learned that there are adaptations that we can do to these lessons to help kids master them and understand the lesson of the day.
Teammate challenge - partner them up, and they have to assign each other a challenge to complete.
Reward athletes for risk-taking
Difficulty dial - you can take a step back and assess if the current level of difficulty is too high or too low for the kids to learn the lesson and adjust accordingly.
On your own - Adapt activities to be done individually so everyone gets the lesson.
