Job Summary

Free Play for Kids is seeking energetic and dedicated individuals to join our team as Jr. Wolves Ball Hockey/Soccer Academies Head Coaches. Through our Wolves Athletic Club Development Academies, we aim to help youth ages 9–17 strengthen their fundamental skills, build confidence, and develop a lifelong love for sport.

As a Jr. Wolves Development Academy Coach, you will design and lead engaging, age-appropriate training sessions in both soccer and ball hockey. The focus is on skill development, teamwork, and personal growth rather than competition. In this role, you will serve as both a coach and a mentor—creating a safe, positive, and inclusive environment where all kids can play, belong, and grow.

Education & Qualifications

  • Working towards or completed a degree/diploma in Physical Education, Sport and Recreation, Kinesiology, Education, Sociology, Psychology, Early Childhood Education, or equivalent

  • Experience coaching youth in soccer and/or hockey, OR extensive playing experience with an interest in coaching

  • Standard First Aid & CPR (or ability to obtain quickly)

  • Clear, up-to-date Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check

  • Experience using tools such as Google Workspace, Google Meet, and Connecteam is an asset

  • A valid Driver’s Licence and access to transportation is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver progressive training sessions in soccer/ball hockey, focused on skill-building, teamwork, and fun

  • Teach youth essential technical and tactical skills in both sports (e.g., ball handling, passing, shooting, positioning)

  • Create an inclusive, positive learning environment where kids of all skill levels can succeed.

  • Adapt activities to suit varying ages and abilities

  • Act as a mentor and role model, supporting the personal and social growth of program participants

  • Set up, maintain, and manage equipment and practice spaces

  • Collaborate with the Program Manager to ensure alignment with Free Play’s philosophy and values

  • Represent Free Play positively in all interactions with families, schools, and community partners

  • Participate in training, workshops, and events offered by Free Play

Skills & Knowledge

  • Passionate about youth development through sport

  • Strong knowledge of soccer and ball hockey fundamentals

  • Ability to plan and lead fun, structured, and safe practices

  • Outgoing, positive, and approachable leadership style

  • Strong communication skills with youth and families

  • Adaptable and resourceful in diverse settings

  • Reliable, organized, and a continuous learner
    Respectful and culturally aware, with a commitment to inclusion and equity

Position Conditions

  • Seasonal, part-time role of approximately 8–10 hours per week

  • Wage for this position ranges from $18 - $22, depending on experience

  • Practices are scheduled on weekdays; occasional special events may take place on weekends

  • Work is primarily in schools, recreation centers, and community facilities across Edmonton
