Job Summary
Free Play for Kids is seeking energetic and dedicated individuals to join our team as Jr. Wolves Ball Hockey/Soccer Academies Head Coaches. Through our Wolves Athletic Club Development Academies, we aim to help youth ages 9–17 strengthen their fundamental skills, build confidence, and develop a lifelong love for sport.
As a Jr. Wolves Development Academy Coach, you will design and lead engaging, age-appropriate training sessions in both soccer and ball hockey. The focus is on skill development, teamwork, and personal growth rather than competition. In this role, you will serve as both a coach and a mentor—creating a safe, positive, and inclusive environment where all kids can play, belong, and grow.
Education & Qualifications
Working towards or completed a degree/diploma in Physical Education, Sport and Recreation, Kinesiology, Education, Sociology, Psychology, Early Childhood Education, or equivalent
Experience coaching youth in soccer and/or hockey, OR extensive playing experience with an interest in coaching
Standard First Aid & CPR (or ability to obtain quickly)
Clear, up-to-date Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check
Experience using tools such as Google Workspace, Google Meet, and Connecteam is an asset
A valid Driver’s Licence and access to transportation is an asset
Responsibilities
Design and deliver progressive training sessions in soccer/ball hockey, focused on skill-building, teamwork, and fun
Teach youth essential technical and tactical skills in both sports (e.g., ball handling, passing, shooting, positioning)
Create an inclusive, positive learning environment where kids of all skill levels can succeed.
Adapt activities to suit varying ages and abilities
Act as a mentor and role model, supporting the personal and social growth of program participants
Set up, maintain, and manage equipment and practice spaces
Collaborate with the Program Manager to ensure alignment with Free Play’s philosophy and values
Represent Free Play positively in all interactions with families, schools, and community partners
Participate in training, workshops, and events offered by Free Play
Skills & Knowledge
Passionate about youth development through sport
Strong knowledge of soccer and ball hockey fundamentals
Ability to plan and lead fun, structured, and safe practices
Outgoing, positive, and approachable leadership style
Strong communication skills with youth and families
Adaptable and resourceful in diverse settings
Reliable, organized, and a continuous learner
Respectful and culturally aware, with a commitment to inclusion and equity
Position Conditions
Seasonal, part-time role of approximately 8–10 hours per week
Wage for this position ranges from $18 - $22, depending on experience
Practices are scheduled on weekdays; occasional special events may take place on weekends
Work is primarily in schools, recreation centers, and community facilities across Edmonton
